COLLECTING, TRANSPORTING AND INCINERATING MEDICAL WASTE
The medical waste, being a special type of waste and having specific features, requires a special treatment. As such, it must be separated from the communal waste, and be separated from the process of its creation and the process of its transport.
Transportation is carried out in containers with two special vehicles for medical waste and three vans.
The user signs a contract for receiving services, that specifies the way of collection of the medical waste.
At the time of signing the contract, the dynamics of waste handling is agreed. Agreements with the major generators of medical waste for collection and transportation of medical waste include a measuring unit kg, whereas the agreements with the smaller entities include a box with fixed unit weight of 5 (five) kilograms as the single measuring unit. The measuring is done on a kilogram scale that is placed on the special vehicle.
After determining the weight in kilograms or the counting of boxes, a note signed by both parties (provider and service user) is issued.
In order to perform proper identification of the medical waste, waste is packaged in yellow containers. At the major generators of medical waste, whose waste is collected on a kilogram basis, the date of the collection has to be pre-determined. This allows the possibility of planning the waste collection. Regarding the smaller generators of medical waste, where the collection is in a box (under current observations), all those who create one or more than one box per month follow a planned dynamic. All others, are visited in the second half of the month or in the fourth week after the previous collection, unless they request additional collection.
The larger quantities of medical waste, which are to be burnt in the incinerator, are measured on an electronic weighing machine at the receipt – dispatch office. The smaller amounts of medical waste are measured on a digital scale that is placed at the furnace for combustion.
The medical waste that is supposed to be incinerated may be brought in by or by a vehicle of the clients .
For the purposes of the medical institutions in the city of Skopje and its surroundings and in accordance with the decision of the Ministry of Health, PE Landfill “Drisla” is the only enterprise engaged in the collection and in the incineration of medical waste and its processing.
For this purpose, a stove for burning medical waste – incinerator with a capacity of 200kg per hour or 500 òî 1.400 tons annually is set on the premises of the landfill.
The British Government donated the incinerator of medical waste to Macedonia. It was brought in February 2000 and it became operational in April 2000.
The incinerator, which is located at the landfill Drisla, has one main purpose, and that is to incinerate medical waste and expired medicines. In addition, it can burn other types of waste, at the request of legal entities and natural persons.
For normal operation of the incinerator, PE landfill “Drisla” Skopje has: a main project, a steel overhang, fence, a reservoir with a manipulative fuel tank of 10 tons, stairs and platform, concrete slab, tampon of the plateau and manipulative delimiters, facility employees, lightning installation and aggregate.
